FAQ's
The human body is controlled by nerves. Everything (circulation, breathing, elimination, immune system, etc.) is under the direction of this unbelievably complicated system. If the impulses of this network are transmitted normally to and from the brain without interference, the body will be at its optimum and able to ward off disease to the best of its ability.
If these impulses are stopped or interfered with, the area dependent upon them will malfunction and/or become diseased. The vertebrae in your spine often become misaligned (subluxated) and cause nerve interference.
Chiropractors adjusts the subluxated vertebra which allows the central nervous system to function as it was intended (at 100%) and allow the body to heal.
Chiropractic is a science, philosophy and art of natural health. It is based on the fact that nerve interference results in organ and/or body malfunction which left uncorrected results in disease.
Chiropractors rely on the inborn or “innate” intelligence of the body. This intelligence made the body and heals the body; it just has to be free of interference.
Chiropractors correct nerve interference through gentle and specific spinal adjustments, thereby removing nerve interference and allowing the body to do what it does best – that is, to take care of itself.

An Atlas Orthogonist is a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic who, in addition to having their standard education, has taken additional post-graduate training in precision instrument spinal adjusting. Atlas Orthogonal doctors utilize a light force method of adjusting the cervical spine; there is no twisting or popping of the neck. This method is gentle and effective, requiring very specialized equipment. Dr. Roundy has been board certified in Atlas Orthogonal chiropractic since 1995.
One of the most obvious differences is the gentle, painless way in which the doctor works. No strenuous manipulation is ever employed or needed. The Atlas Orthogonist’s methods require such light force to the affected area that patients, who may expect more forceful manipulations as part of their treatment, find it hard to believe that anything effective has been accomplished. Their doubts and fears quickly vanish shortly after realizing the results obtained.
The Atlas Orthogonist works in a way which speeds and encourages the body’s own healing process. The doctor aids that process by gently adjusting the cervical vertebrae back toward normal alignment, thus helping the entire body. The Chiropractor’s patients, men, women and children, soon realize that health care need not be harsh or painful to be effective. Prevention and early detection of misalignments through regular checkups is the key to natural health.
Almost anyone who is experiencing a departure from optimal health, or those who are at their optimum and would like to remain there. Since the spine is the central core of the human body, it is vitally important that it be examined on a periodic basis even though there may be no apparent signs of trouble.
The care is decided upon after a thorough evaluation of the patient’s spine and prior health history. Combining that information with the results of the examination findings, leg measurements and X-ray studies, the doctor is able to pinpoint accurately the source of the problem and decide upon the best plan of care.
Yes, if qualifying findings are discovered during the examination. It is very important that certain radiographs be made so that the most gentle and precise care can be rendered.
“To see is to know, to not see is to guess.”
Dr. Roundy will never guess about your health. Your doctor, who has had extensive radiographic (x-ray) training, will never require radiographic studies which are not vital to the correction of vertebral subluxation complexes.

NO. Chiropractic performed properly does not hurt.
At our office, our goal is to provide our patients with the most specific and gentle form of chiropractic care available. Infrequently you may hear an ‘audible’ sound as a bone in the lower spine moves, but most patients never hear a sound. Our protocol rarely requires any twisting or ‘audible’-type maneuvers. We will never twist or “pop” your neck and we will always inform you of what we will be doing.
Doctors of Chiropractic are frequently referred to as “back doctors.” This term is used because a number of studies from several different countries concluded that Chiropractic care for low-back pain is the best choice for low-back-pain treatment. They also noted that Chiropractic patients were more pleased with the care given when compared to other patients receiving medical care for the same condition.
While being the BEST at low-back-pain is good news, it’s not the whole story. Chiropractors should more appropriately be called “Nerve Doctors” or “Doctors of Potential,” because that is what we deal with every day. Furthermore, the goal of the Chiropractor is not the treatment of symptoms or disease, but the correction of vertebral subluxation. Once a subluxation is corrected, the whole body functions better. Take care of your self regularly, not just when you hurt – only then can health manifest itself.

Many people have heard – “If you see a chiropractor once, you HAVE to go for the rest of your life.” This is like saying – “If you go to a dentist once, you have to go for the rest of your life,” or “If you take supplements once, you have to take them for the rest of your life.”
If something you do or have done to yourself promotes health, shouldn’t you do it for the rest of your life?
In many cases, patients who get under Chiropractic Care CHOOSE to remain under care for life because of the wonderful changes they have experienced and the optimum health/potential they have achieved.
I knew after my first Chiropractic Adjustment that I would remain under care for the rest of my life. By my third adjustment I decided to become a Doctor of Chiropractic (I was already taking my pre-meds for dentistry). Chiropractic care changed my life – I felt better than I had ever felt before and I could move better than I had ever thought possible…my life and health were enhanced and I wanted to stay that way for the rest of my life – why would I only want to take care of myself once I had experienced a departure from health? This would be like taking the car to a mechanic for an oil change only after the engine blew-up. Like all things we value, they need to be maintained – I know of nothing more valuable then my health!

Symptoms are nothing more than warning lights on the dashboard of your body (so to speak). Unfortunately, symptoms are usually the last thing to show up and the first thing to go away.
Did you know that approximately 80% of the cancers known to man occur without any symptoms until the end stages? Or, did you know that for 50% of heart attack sufferers, the first symptom is death?
Many view the symptom as the problem and try their best to treat or eliminate it. This most commonly occurs by taking drugs/medication to reduce the symptoms, i.e. taking aspirin to reduce a headache.
Are headaches a result of too little aspirin circulating in the blood stream? Are stomachaches the cause of too little antacid? Of course not – when looked at in this light, it all seems a little ridiculous!
Imagine your house on fire and the smoke detector goes off. Would you aim the fire extinguisher at the smoke alarm because it’s making an annoying screech, or would you aim the extinguisher at the flames?
For those of you not picking up on the analogy, treating and covering up symptoms with drugs/medication is just like aiming the extinguisher at the alarm. The symptom isn’t the problem, it’s only announcing the presence of something to be concerned with.
Don’t treat the symptom, find the cause…or better yet, prevent the cause.

Dorland’s Medical Dictionary:
“Health is a state of OPTIMAL PHYSICAL, MENTAL and SOCIAL well-being and NOT merely the ABSENCE of disease and infirmity.”
[Basically put, health is not a matter of how good you “feel”, health is a measured by having the highest level of physical health, mental health and social health. Symptoms aren’t the problem, they are just the manifestation of a problem – look to the CAUSE, not the symptom.]
Webster’s Dictionary:
“Health is a condition of wholeness in which ALL of the TISSUES, ORGANS AND SYSTEMS of the body are FUNCTIONING at 100% ALL of the time.”
[Stated in another way, in order to be truly healthy, you must have all of your body parts and they must ALL be functioning at 100% to manifest health. Basically put, someone without all of their organs/glands cannot be as healthy as someone with all of their organs/glands.]
State of Health: “HOW your body is FUNCTIONING at a given point in time.” TRUE HEALTH = 100% FUNCTION
Someone with nerve interference (vertebral subluxation) cannot be as healthy as someone without nerve interference. Subluxation produces nerve interference, nerves control EVERY function in the human body, nerve interference disrupts organ/gland function, disrupted organ/gland function disrupts the chemical balance, chemical imbalance disrupts all body processes. It’s as simple as that!

Chiropractic recognizes that we (science) haven’t the slightest idea how to run the human body and that fortunately, for us, we don’t have to know. Inborn within each of us is an innate intelligence capable of governing our body for a lifetime. It is only necessary for the innate intelligence to express itself, which it must do through the nervous system. The function of the chiropractor is to maintain your body free of interference. Vertebral subluxations result in an interference with the transmission of this inborn intelligence; Chiropractors remove this interference through vertebral adjustments.
If the world could grasp this Big Idea, all concepts concerning health would change overnight. Almost no drugs would be taken except in lifesaving emergencies or due to abnormal circumstances (accidents, etc.). The individual would still realize that although the drug is keeping them alive or freeing them from pain, it is not making them healthy again. Only their body can restore itself to proper function. Surgery similarly would be put into its proper perspective. All the so-called therapies would be seen for what they are: often attempts to relieve discomfort while overlooking the cause. People would begin to look elsewhere for the answer to all physical, environmental, and emotional problems. They would no longer revere the “man in white” the intellectual, or the scientist who proclaims “I have discovered the cure!” They would cease to worship the creation and begin to worship the Creator. This is the Big Idea in chiropractic.
Others who know about Innate Intelligence
“Intelligence is present everywhere in our bodies. Our own inner-intelligence is far superior to any we can try to substitute from the outside.” Deepak Chopra, M.D.
“God and the wisdom of the human constitute 90% of the hope of patients to recover. The body simply has super wisdom which is biased in favor of life rather than death.” Richard Colbalt, M.D.
“…A kind of super-intelligence exists in each of us, infinitely smarter and possessed of technical know-how far beyond our present understanding.” Lewis Thomas, M.D.
“The mind can dramatically affect the body. It follows that whatever upsets the brain’s control of the immune system will foster malignancy. I try to get patients to understand that the body heals and not the therapy.” Bernie S. Siegel, M.D.

A subluxation is the condition of a vertebra that has lost its proper juxtaposition with the one above or the one below, or both; to an extent less than a luxation; which impinges nerves and interferes with the transmission of mental impulses (from Chiropractic Textbook, R. W. Stephenson, 1927).
Basically put, a subluxation (vertebral subluxation complex) is a misaligned bone that causes nerve interference. This interference alters nerve output, either increasing it or decreasing it – either way, the end result is malfunction. Malfunction left long enough will result in a lack of ease or dis-ease. Disease will eventually lead to a symptom.
Doctors of Chiropractic stress the point of early detection and prevention because of this fact. Why wait until symptoms manifest? Symptoms are nothing more than an accumulation of damaged tissue cells.
Posture is a preliminary way Doctors of Chiropractic evaluate the structural integrity of the human frame. Look in a mirror – is your head tilted to one side? Is one of your shoulders lower than the other? Do you have a short leg or find yourself having to tilt from side to side while standing still? Read the following quote to understand why we Doctors of Chiropractic do what we do!
“Better than 90 percent of the energy output of the brain is used in relating to the physical body in its gravitational field. The more mechanically distorted a person is, the less energy available for thinking, metabolism and healing.” Roger Sperry, Ph.D. – 1981 Nobel Prize for Brain Research
